UNODC – Constructive Dialogue on Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons

An Constructive dialogue on the review process following the conclusion of the ninth session of the Working Group on Smuggling of Migrants and the twelfth session of the Working Group on Trafficking in Persons were held in Vienna from  28 June 1st July 2022. For the first time a Constructive dialog involved NGO Panelists and Marija Andjelkovic, director of ASTRA was the first panelist to speak on Appropriate criminal justice responses to victims who have been compelled to commit offences as a result of their being trafficked, including as it relates to victim services.

On the sideways of the  twelfth session of the working group on trafficking in persons side event panel was organized by UNODC with the topic of  “The principle of non-punishment of victims of trafficking in persons & investigations of migrant smuggling”. Sharing the panel with  Dr. Marika McAdam and UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons Professor Siobhan Mullally, Marija Andjelkovic presented  the  experience of ASTRA clients on this issue.

The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) established, at its ninth session held on 15-19 October 2018, a review mechanism for the implementation of UNTOC and its Protocols by adopting resolution 9/1 entitled Establishment of the Mechanism for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols thereto to which the Procedures and Rules for the Functioning of the Mechanism for the Review of the Implementation of the UNTOC and the Protocols thereto was annexed.
