Twenty lawyers successfully completed the two-month HELP course of the Council of Europe on the topic of trafficking in human beings. The course aimed to increase the capacity of as many lawyers as possible to represent victims of trafficking in human beings.
The course included 11 modules, and some of the topics covered were: definitions and legal identification of victims, assistance to victims of trafficking, the non-punishment principle, Investigation, prosecution and victims’ rights, sentencing, compensation, the right to international protection, return and repatriation of victims, trafficking in human beings, technology and trafficking in human beings and trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labor exploitation.
The course was led by tutors Tijana Kostic, a lawyer with many years of experience in representing victims of trafficking in human beings, and Marija Andjelkovic, Director of ASTRA.
HELP is the Council of Europe’s main legal education platform, which aims to provide training on European human rights standards for judges, lawyers and prosecutors. HELP courses enable lawyers to better protect human rights at the national level and to keep up to date with the constantly evolving standards and case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
