Belgrade, March 20, 2019. – In cooperation with the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office and with the support of the US Embassy, ASTRA organized a Round Table on the topic of trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labor exploitation. The round table is intended for the deputies of the senior public prosecutor of the Republic of Serbia, and the participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the concrete cases of labor exploitation, from Serbia and the region. Some of the topics of discussion regarding presented cases were: how to differentiate servitude from forced labor, what should be considered when building a litigation, how to provide adequate support to victims of exploitation and others. In particular, the prosecutors emphasized the low level of awareness not only among victims, especially men, who, due to their mentality, refuse to recognize that they are victims, but also in the work of colleagues, primarily those from the courts. The area of labor exploitation, as a form of trafficking in human beings, is gaining more attention from the professional and general public. Therefore, events like this Round table contribute to raising the awareness and more adequate response and protection of victims. One more important message from the round table is that anyone can become the victim of labor exploatation, regardless of gender, material or even educational status.
