Round table held in Zrenjanin − Position and rights of foreign workers in Serbia

Astra – action against trafficking in human beings in cooperation with the organization Roza – women’s labor rights, organized on Thursday, July 13, at the Vojvodina Hotel in Zrenjanin, the round table entitled The position and rights of foreign workers in Serbia – challenges and recommendations for the improvement of the normative framework and policy. The aim of the round table was to bring the topic of improving the rights and position of foreign workers in Serbia and their protection from human trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation to the interested actors in the field of labor and social rights, migration, the fight against human trafficking and labor exploitation, regarding the newly proposed amendments to the Law on Foreigners and the Law on Employment of Foreigners. Within the two-hour event, Astra’s previous experience of working on cases of labor exploitation of economic migrants, an analysis of facts and trends related to the migrant workforce, as well as challenges and recommendations for the protection of the rights of foreign workers in Serbia were presented. The round table brought together representatives of the National Employment Service of Zrenjanin, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Center for Social Work, the Police Department, the Labor Inspectorate, as well as representatives of trade unions, the media and civil society organizations.

The event was organized as part of the project Labor Justice for All, which Astra implements in cooperation with the Open Society Foundation Serbia.
