Human trafficking serious regional problem

Vranje – ASTRA network together with NGO Human rights Committee, SOS Hotline Vranje and local authorities organized panel in “Human Trafficking – Situation in Serbia” in Economic School Dimitrije Tucović in Vranje.

Human trafficking is regional problem in Western Balkans, and due to its geographical position Serbia is transit country for this multi-national business of selling people, children and organs – said Ivana Radović from ASTRA. Coordinator of Human Rights Committee and SOS Hotline in Vranje Suzana Antić, from District Court in Vranje judge Vesna Stevanović, and police inspector for fight against human trafficking from Police department in Vranje Siniša Antonijević spoke about local experiences.

– Lately, forms of recruiting young girls and children have been improved, especially through interesting internet offers for jobs in the field of modeling and this is what we are facing at local level – said inspector Antonijević.

For District court in Vranje judge, Vesna Stevanović, the most important is to educate and through such panels prevent “entering into trafficking chain”. She said that legislation in this field has become stricter, and that District court in Vranje stated several sentences for human trafficking. The panel was attended also by president of city parliament in Vranje doctor Slobodan Stamenković, members of city council Nebojša Selistarević and Branislav Stojančić, as well as student of primar and high schools from Vranje and close municipalities.
