POVERTY — Children, some as young as ten, work in clothing industry in India for GAP Inc. in order to be sold further in west-European market, reported yesterday London weekly Observer. This magazine informs that children stated to have been sold to the workplace by their parents, mostly from poor countries such as Bihar and West Bengal, and that they will not be permitted to go home until they finish the agreed business. “Observer” quoted a boy named Jivaj, who said that children are badly beaten with a rubber pipe, if they cry or don’t work hard enough. “Gap” admitted that children appeared to have been caught up in the production process as one of sub-contractors violated the agreement.
