ASTRA, with Save the Children’s support, has started a new media campaign dedicated to the suppression and prevention of trafficking in children. In order to reach out to adolescent population, which is assessed to be at highest risk of falling victim to trafficking, we filmed 10 TV spots featuring celebrities such as Goran Jevtić, Nenad Stojmenović, Zoran Kostić Cane, Nikola Žigić, Marija Karan, Mirka Vasiljević and Sloboda Mićalović. All these persons agreed to participate in this campaign for fee.
Since trafficking in children is a serious social problem, whose resolving demands continuous measures of prevention, this media campaign is planned to take place in two cycles – May-June and September-October. The campaign is supported by street actions, the distribution of promo-material through print media and our presence at cultural events and festivals.
An important part of this campaign is a pilot study “Human (Child) Trafficking – A Look through the Internet Window”, which examines a new trend in human trafficking observed in the region, that is, increasing use of the Internet as a recruitment instrument.
STREET ACTION
On October 2, 2006, ASTRA organized a street action “Save the Children from Human Trafficking” in Knez Mihailo Street. This action was organized in order to inform the citizens of Belgrade about the problem of human/child trafficking. ASTRA activists talked with passersby about this problem, dangers it takes, as well as about the ways of prevention. The citizens of Belgrade showed great interest in this problem, as well as in promotional – educative materials distributed on that occasion.
This street action was simultaneously organized in towns were organizations – members of ASTRA Network operate: Taboo, Group for Affirmation of Differences – Zrenjanin, Esperanca – Novi Sad, Women in Action – Velika Plana, Center for Girls – Užice, Association of Women and Mothers Anna – Novi Pazar, SOS for Women and Children Victims of Violence – Vlasotince, Center for Cultural Affirmation – Dimitrovgrad and Committee for Human Rights – Vranje.
We would like to thank to all those who contributed and helped us carry out this action.
